Groundbreaking Ceremony Marks Start of Crisis Residential Unit in Decatur

On December 10, The Mental Health Center of North Central Alabama broke ground on a new 16-bed crisis residential unit at 4110 Highway 31 South in Decatur. This in-patient psychiatric facility will serve 18 counties in Region 1, providing critical care for individuals committed to the Alabama Department of Mental Health.

"Since 2013-2014, we've only had facilities like this in Huntsville, Cullman, Jasper, and Anniston," said Lisa Coleman, CEO of the Mental Health Center of North Central Alabama. "Having this facility in our area means families and law enforcement won’t have to travel as far to access the intensive care patients need."

The project is funded by the City of Decatur, the Morgan County Commission, Senator Arthur Orr, Alabama legislators and the Alabama Department of Mental Health. Construction is expected to be completed by October 2025.

The Mental Health Center of North Central Alabama is a public, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that has provided psychiatric and mental health services for adults, children and families in Lawrence, Limestone and Morgan counties since 1967. The Mental Health Center is committed to providing the highest quality treatment, education and assistance to people affected by mental health and substance use issues.
