Top 7 Stories of 2024

As a new year approaches, we find ourselves reflecting on a few of the achievements we've shared with our members, partners and the community throughout the year. A notable highlight includes our inaugural SuperStar Teacher program recognizing teachers in the Decatur-Morgan County area who show excellence in leadership, creativity and imagination in and out of the classroom setting. Additionally, we hosted three successful hiring events, connecting hundreds of job seekers with local employers.

Decatur Receives $18.4 Million for Bike Trail - In March, the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded the City of Decatur more than $18.4 million in federal funds for the Dr. Bill Sims Hike-Bike Way on the Singing River Trail.

Career Academies Becomes Third High School for Decatur City Schools - In March, the Decatur City Schools Board of Education approved the addition of Career Academies of Decatur (CAD) as third high school for the upcoming 2024-2025 academic year.

Downtown Decatur Celebrates Major Milestones 

Morgan County Officials Break Ground on New Event Center - In May, the Morgan County Commission broke ground on a new $7.16 million, 34,627-square-foot event center in Cotaco.

United Launch Alliance Successfully Launches First Crewed Starliner - For the first time in history, a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V carrying NASA astronauts aboard Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner lifted off on June 5.

EV Technology Center to Provide Workforce Training - In October, construction began on the $30 million EV Technology Center at Alabama Robotics Technology Park while several industry partners, including Bunge Corporation , GreenPoint AgM & J Precision and Wolverine Industries, announced expansions.

Groundbreaking for Crisis Residential Unit in Decatur - In December, the Mental Health Center of North Central Alabama broke ground on a new 16-bed crisis residential unit to provide in-patient psychiatric care.
