Chamber and Calhoun Partner to Offer Hands-On Educational Camps for Students

In June, the Chamber partnered with Calhoun Community College to offer five hands-on educational camps designed to equip high school students with real-world skills in high-demand industries. High school juniors and seniors took part in a four-day Precision Machining Camp, where they were introduced to the fundamentals of computer numerical control (CNC) programming. Participants safely operated CNC equipment under expert supervision, building both confidence and technical skills.

Another group of students engaged in the three-day Advanced Automotive Academy, where they explored the future of transportation by working directly with electric and hybrid vehicles, receiving an introduction to gas engine systems and even building their own electric motor.

For those interested in healthcare careers, the Healthcare Education Camp returned for its second year. This two-day experience welcomed students in grades 9–12 and provided exposure to all nine programs within Calhoun’s Health Sciences Division. Activities included interactive sessions on the Decatur Campus and a tour of the Huntsville Campus.

Younger and older students alike also had the chance to dive into the world of cybersecurity through two five-day CyberPatriot Camps, offered at no cost to participants. One session was tailored to 9th–12th graders and the other to 6th–8th graders. Campers explored cybersecurity fundamentals through interactive lessons using Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems, multiple numbering systems and operating system configuration. These camps are part of CyberPatriot, a nationwide youth cyber education program that engages students across the U.S.

The Chamber and Calhoun will continue with educational camps in July with the return of SWeETy (Summer Welding, Engineering & Electrical Technology) Camp and a second session of Precision Machining Camp.
