Chamber hosting free industry specific business growth workshops featuring San Francisco-based small business expert
The Decatur-Morgan County Chamber of Commerce is hosting four workshops designed to give business owners, managers and members of leadership industry-specific opportunities to learn how to grow and market their business for success.
Cindy Yang, small business expert for NerdWallet, will serve as facilitator for the workshops, scheduled for May 13 and May 15 in Decatur. NerdWallet.com is a San Francisco-based personal finance website dedicated to helping consumers make empowered decisions about their money. Their data-driven tools and analyses bring clarity to topics including small business, education, finance, health, investing and shopping. In February 2015, the site ranked Decatur as the eighth best metropolitan area in the country for those working in technology and engineering jobs.
"Yang brings a unique experience and perspective to Decatur, and we think the combination of her energy and knowledge will be a great benefit to our business community," said Crystal Brown, director of business development for the Chamber. "Her work with other chambers of commerce across the country and teaching marketing for the U.S. Small Business Administration office in the Bay Area helps her understand the requirements of small business owners and what they need to be successful – whether they have five employees or a team of 50. Approximately two of every three new jobs created in our economy are created by small businesses, and 70 percent of the Chamber's members are small businesses. These workshops will give great value to our area."
Two workshops are schedule for May 13 at Decatur Country Club. A retail and restaurant workshop will be 2-3:30 p.m., and an engineering workshop will be 3:45 – 5:15 p.m. On May 15, two workshops are scheduled for the Alabama Center for the Arts in downtown Decatur. An arts industry workshop is set for 9:30-11 a.m., and an industrial production and supply workshop is set for 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Each workshop will feature brainstorm sessions, discussions of case studies and in-depth Q&A sessions. The workshops are free and open to the public regardless of Chamber membership.
To register, visit the Chamber's online events calendar at http://tools.dcc.org/events. For questions about the workshop, contact Brown at the Chamber at (256) 353-5312.
The workshops are in conjunction with the Chamber's annual Small Business Awards Celebration, set for May 13, 11:30 a.m. at Decatur Country Club. Yang is serving as keynote speaker of the luncheon, which recognizes the contributions of small business to the local and national economies and honors business leaders in our community. Three awards – the Baker-Cook-Jones Small Business Person of the Year, the Lynn C. Fowler Non-Profit Professional of the Year and the Arthur Orr Young Professional of the Year – will be given to local members of the business community. The luncheon is presented by Redstone Federal Credit Union.
